Fourth Grade Service Project Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

When asked, students who have moved past or are currently in fourth grade will likely cite dog biscuits as one of the most memorable parts of their year.  As in years past, this fall continues not only the tradition of Mrs. Potter's class baking dog biscuits, but also the strong service partnership between RGS and the Espanola Valley Humane Society.

For ten straight years, the fourth grade class has been heavily involved with this local animal shelter.  The year begins with a class field trip to the shelter and, after their initial visit, small groups take time from their weekends to work as volunteers at the shelter one Saturday per month with Mrs. Potter and Mrs. Cottle.  Although there is time for play with the animals, students are primarily there to work.  They are responsible for cleaning cages and helping to socialize the animals, among other important duties.

The lessons of their service project are carried through to the classroom in math lessons and even a basic understanding of the economic principles behind running a business--start-up costs, profits, and the like.  Additionally, during bi-weekly 'centers' students spend time baking dog biscuits with the help of their teachers and parent volunteers.  After several weeks of baking, the class packages and creates labels in preparation for their fundraising efforts.

So how, where, and when can you purchase your dog biscuits to benefit the Espanola shelter?  Beginning December 7th, 12oz. bags will be on sale in the 4th grade.  The price per bag will be $10, and all proceeds will be donated to the EVHS.  In addition to the homemade dog biscuits, catnip toys, dog bandanas, and dog toys will also be available for purchase.  And for those animal lovers in your life, there will be a deluxe gift basket available with an assortment of all the items.  Keep an eye out for ordering information to be sent home in the coming week.

If the amount of work that the fourth grade class has already done makes you dizzy, they're also organizing a towel and blanket drive for the shelter that will run concurrently with the sale of their biscuits.  The shelter is always in need of these items, and appreciates any old or unused towels & blankets.  The goal for fundraising this year is to clear $1,000 of profit for the shelter.  Questions on how you can be a part of this exciting service project can be directed to fourth grade teacher, Kristin Potter.
